About the author

Born Paula Oppenheimer in Berlin on December 31, 1862, she became known as Paula Dehmel, a German writer whose best-known work was created for children. She wrote poems, tales, and other pieces that mixed imagination with a close feeling for childhood.

She was married to the poet Richard Dehmel from 1889 until 1900, and the two also collaborated on children's books. Reliable reference sources describe her as an important children's author of her time, and her writing continues to appear in collected editions and public-domain libraries.

Paula Dehmel died in Steglitz, near Berlin, on July 9, 1918. Though she is not as widely known today as some of her contemporaries, her poems and stories remain a charming part of German children's literature.
