About the author

Born in Mayenne on May 13, 1893, Paul Lintier studied law in Lyon before the First World War changed the course of his life. He served in the French Army from the start of the conflict and wrote directly from his experience as an artilleryman.

His best-known books, Ma pièce and Le Tube 1233, grew out of those years at the front. Readers valued them for their clear, immediate picture of a soldier's daily life, and Ma pièce was recognized by the Académie française.

Lintier was killed by shrapnel at Jeandelaincourt on March 15, 1916. Because he died so young, his work remains closely tied to the brief, intense life that produced it: a soldier's witness in prose that is direct, observant, and deeply human.
