About the author

Best known as a British music journalist, broadcaster, and author, he built his career writing about pop and rock in a way that feels informed without losing its energy. He started out as a freelance journalist in the early 1990s, writing for outlets including Melody Maker, and later became the magazine’s features editor.

He went on to help launch Uncut in 1997, serving as deputy editor, and has written for a wide range of newspapers and magazines, including The Guardian, where he became especially associated with championing emerging artists. Alongside his journalism, he has written more than a dozen music books and biographies, covering artists such as Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Björk, the Spice Girls, the Prodigy, Gang of Four, and Wire.

His work sits at the meeting point of music reporting, criticism, and pop history: part scene report, part interview, part cultural snapshot. If you enjoy books that come from someone who has spent years close to bands, magazines, and the changing sound of popular music, his writing is an easy place to start.
