author
A longtime British music journalist and biographer, he has spent decades writing about everyone from post-punk trailblazers to global pop stars. His work brings a reporter’s eye and a fan’s energy to stories about how artists are made.
Paul Lester is a British music journalist, author, and broadcaster from Elstree, Hertfordshire. He began his career as a freelance writer in the late 1980s and early 1990s, contributing to outlets including Melody Maker, before becoming that magazine’s features editor during the grunge and Britpop years.
He later helped launch Uncut and served there as deputy editor. After going freelance in 2007, he wrote for publications including The Guardian, Sunday Times, Daily Express, Record Collector, and Classic Rock, and became especially well known for championing emerging artists.
As an author, he has written music books and biographies on acts and artists including Wire, Gang of Four, P!nk, Dizzee Rascal, Pharrell Williams, and Lady Gaga. His background in journalism gives his books a lively, accessible feel, with plenty of attention to the culture around the music as well as the people making it.
