Born in West Newton, Indiana, on August 23, 1876, he studied history at Indiana University and went on to earn a PhD at Columbia University in 1904. He later lectured at Columbia and built a wide-ranging writing career that included fiction, magazine work, and reference writing.

His interests were broad and lively. Alongside books on history and public affairs, he wrote adventure and travel narratives, including On the Headwaters of Peace River, and he also published George Washington: Farmer, a look at Washington's home life and agricultural work.

Haworth was a prolific author whose work connected scholarship with readable storytelling. He died in 1936, leaving behind books that reflect an early-20th-century fascination with American history, democracy, and the shape of everyday life.
