Born in Thorntown, Indiana, on April 7, 1902, Paul Hutchens grew up near Sugar Creek, the setting that later inspired his most famous books. He studied at Moody Bible Institute, became an ordained Baptist minister, and worked as an evangelist and preacher as well as a writer.
Hutchens is remembered most for The Sugar Creek Gang, a long-running series of 36 Christian adventure novels for children. The books follow a group of boys through mysteries, dangers, and everyday adventures, blending lively storytelling with lessons about friendship, courage, and faith.
Alongside his children’s fiction, he also wrote numerous adult novels. He died in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on January 23, 1977, but his stories have remained especially popular with families who enjoy wholesome, faith-centered fiction.
