About the author

Paul Adam was a German bookbinder and specialist writer, born on February 20, 1849, and died on July 27, 1931. He trained in bookbinding in Breslau and later became both a technical teacher and a researcher of bookbinding and bindings.

In 1874 he opened a small private bookbinding workshop in Gießen, and in 1894 he founded a private technical school in Düsseldorf. He was also involved in major professional organizations, helping found the Bund Deutscher Buchbinder-Innungen and taking part in the Jakob-Krause-Bund.

Adam is remembered as an important author on the craft. From 1901 to 1920 he edited the trade journal Archiv für Buchbinderei, and his many specialist publications helped document techniques, materials, and the professional standards of bookbinding for later generations.
