About the author
Patrick C. Wilkins was an American journalist and author best known in the Pacific Northwest for his long career at KATU, the ABC affiliate in Portland, Oregon. Accounts of his work describe him as a familiar on-air presence for decades, serving in roles including news director, anchor, assignment editor, reporter, and feature journalist.
His writing grew naturally out of that reporting life. Somewhere in the Northwest draws on years spent traveling through Oregon and Washington in search of memorable people, places, and events, while Somewhere in Oregon adapts stories from his time covering the state. Across both books, the appeal is the same: a warm, observant interest in regional history and everyday lives.
Wilkins was born in 1927 and died in 2022. Even in book descriptions written during his lifetime, he is remembered less as a studio figure than as someone happiest out on the road, following unusual stories wherever they led.
