Born in Dublin on April 9, 1915, Leonard Patrick O'Connor Wibberley became a journalist and author whose career ranged across satire, mystery, historical fiction, and books for younger readers. He lived in Britain before moving to the United States in 1943, and over the course of his career he published more than 100 books.

He wrote under several names, including Patrick O'Connor, Christopher Webb, and Leonard Holton. Under his own name, he is best remembered for The Mouse That Roared and the Grand Fenwick novels, which mixed comedy with pointed political observation. The Patrick O'Connor byline was used on some of his children's and young-adult books, including adventure and racing stories.

Wibberley died in Santa Monica, California, on November 22, 1983. Whether readers meet him as Leonard Wibberley or Patrick O'Connor, his work has an easy readability, a playful sense of humor, and a talent for turning unusual premises into entertaining stories.
