About the author

Born in Mallow, County Cork, on March 17, 1852, Patrick Augustine Sheehan became a Catholic priest and later a canon of the diocese of Cloyne. He is often remembered as Canon Sheehan of Doneraile, the parish where he served for many years and where he wrote most of his major books.

Sheehan studied at St Colman's College and Maynooth, and his writing ranged from novels to essays and religious reflections. His best-known fiction includes Geoffrey Austin: Student, My New Curate, Luke Delmege, and Glenanaar, works that helped make him a widely read Irish Catholic novelist in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Alongside his literary work, he was active in public life and wrote about education, faith, culture, and Irish political questions. His books are often valued for the way they join storytelling with pastoral insight, offering a vivid picture of Irish Catholic life in his era.
