About the author

Born in Venice in 1795, Pasquale Revoltella rose from modest beginnings to become one of the leading businessmen of Trieste. After moving there as a young man, he built his career in commerce and finance and became closely tied to the city’s growth as a major port of the Habsburg world.

Revoltella is especially remembered for his role in promoting the Suez Canal. He supported the project financially and politically, and his name became linked with the 19th century belief that trade, travel, and technology could redraw the map of the world.

He was also an important patron of culture and public life. His house, collections, and bequests helped create what is now the Revoltella Museum in Trieste, making him memorable not only as an entrepreneur but also as a figure who gave lasting cultural value to the city he helped enrich.
