Born in Naic, Cavite, on May 17, 1857, he became one of the notable Filipino men of letters of his time. He is remembered as a writer, journalist, publisher, and linguist, and is especially known for producing an early Tagalog translation of José Rizal's Noli Me Tangere.

His career was closely tied to journalism and public life. Accounts of his work describe him as an active participant in the growth of Tagalog-language publishing, with a strong reputation for nationalist writing and advocacy for press freedom.

He died on February 5, 1921. Today, he is often remembered not only for his own writing, but also for helping widen access to important texts in the Filipino language.
