About the author

Born in County Limerick in 1827, Patrick Weston Joyce became an Irish historian, educationalist, linguist, and collector of traditional music. Reliable reference sources describe him as especially important for his work on Irish etymology and on the place names of Ireland, subjects he explored in books written for a broad readership.

He spent much of his career in education, rising through the Irish national school system and later leading the Government Training College in Dublin. Alongside that work, he published widely on Irish history, language, folklore, and everyday life, bringing scholarly material into a clear, readable style that appealed beyond academic circles.

Joyce died on January 7, 1914. He remains closely associated with the preservation of Irish cultural memory, particularly through his writing on local names, traditions, and music.
