About the author

Born in County Limerick in 1827, Patrick Weston Joyce became one of the best-known Irish writers on language, folklore, history, and education. He worked as a teacher and later as a school inspector, and that practical background shaped the clear, helpful style that runs through his books.

Joyce is especially remembered for his work on Irish place names, social history, and traditional music. Rather than treating the past as something distant, he gathered names, customs, and stories from ordinary life and showed how much they could reveal about Ireland’s culture and memory.

He died in Dublin in 1914, but his writing has remained useful to readers interested in Irish heritage. For many people, his books still offer an inviting way into the history of the Irish language, landscape, and folk tradition.
