About the author

Born in County Cork on 29 December 1879, Patrick Sarsfield O'Hegarty became known as a writer, editor, historian, and civil servant, as well as a member of the Supreme Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was deeply involved in the separatist movement in the early twentieth century, and his political life ran alongside a substantial literary and historical output.

O'Hegarty wrote across politics, culture, and history, and he is remembered as one of the sharp-minded commentators of modern Irish life. Sources on his life also note his lasting importance as a collector of Irish books and printed materials; the P. S. O'Hegarty Collection at the University of Kansas reflects the scale of his interests and the seriousness of his engagement with Irish literature and public life.

He died on 17 December 1955. For readers today, his appeal lies in the way he connects literature with the arguments, ideals, and tensions of revolutionary Ireland.
