About the author

Born in Wellington on February 2, 1884, and dying there on November 19, 1970, Petrus Imker Hoogenhout was an Afrikaans writer whose career stretched well beyond literature. He worked as a school principal and education inspector, later served in public administration, and was also the administrator of South West Africa, now Namibia.

Alongside that public career, he wrote in Afrikaans and became known for books that reached both young readers and general audiences. Surviving bibliographic records show fiction such as Op die delwerye, while library and archival listings also connect him with Afrikaans readers, school texts, and reference works on idioms and sayings.

He was the son of C. P. Hoogenhout, an important early language figure, and his own writing fits into that same larger story of building Afrikaans as a language of reading, teaching, and culture. For audiobook listeners, he offers a glimpse into an earlier generation of South African writing shaped by education, language activism, and a strong interest in making Afrikaans accessible.
