Born in Tranent, East Lothian, in 1849, Peter Hume Brown became one of the key figures in Scottish historical scholarship. Reliable reference sources describe him as a Scottish historian and professor who played an important part in establishing Scottish history as a significant academic discipline.

Alongside his teaching and writing, he spent 16 years editing the Register of the Privy Council of Scotland. He was also recognized at a high level in public and scholarly life, serving as Historiographer Royal and being elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
