by P. Hume (Peter Hume) Brown
Born on 17 December 1849, Peter Hume Brown was a Scottish historian who became one of the key figures in establishing Scottish history as an academic discipline. He is especially associated with the University of Edinburgh, where he taught and helped give the subject a stronger place in university life.
Alongside his teaching, he wrote widely on Scottish history and was known for careful scholarship as well as a readable style. He also spent many years editing the Register of the Privy Council of Scotland, a major documentary source, and later served as Historiographer Royal for Scotland.
Brown died on 1 December 1918, but his influence lasted well beyond his lifetime. He is remembered as one of the scholars who helped shape how Scotland’s history would be researched, taught, and understood in the modern era.
