P. G. (Pelham Grenville) Wodehouse

1881–1975

Best known for creating Jeeves and Bertie Wooster, this master of comic prose built a wonderfully off-kilter world of absent-minded aristocrats, sharp-witted valets, and blissfully avoidable disasters. His books are still loved for their light touch, intricate plots, and sheer verbal sparkle.

About the author

Born in Guildford, England, in 1881, P. G. Wodehouse became one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. He wrote novels, short stories, lyrics, plays, and screen material across a career that lasted more than seventy years, producing an enormous body of work marked by precision, playfulness, and an unmistakable comic voice.

He is especially associated with some of the best-loved characters in English comic fiction: Jeeves and Bertie Wooster, Psmith, and the residents of Blandings Castle, including Lord Emsworth. Alongside his fiction, he also worked in musical theater, collaborating on numerous shows and songs, which helped shape the brisk rhythm and dialogue that readers often love in his prose.

Wodehouse spent parts of his life in both Britain and the United States, and he died in 1975. Decades later, his stories remain popular because they offer a complete comic universe of their own—elegant, absurd, and comfortingly timeless.
