About the author

P. G. Bales is known as the author of History of the 1/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment, 1914–1919, first published in 1920. In that book he is identified as Capt. P. G. Bales, M.C., and as a former adjutant of the battalion, which suggests he wrote from direct experience as well as from official records.

In the preface, Bales explains that he had been responsible for keeping the battalion’s war diary for more than two years. He says the history was built mainly from official documents, then supplemented by the recollections of officers and other ranks, giving the book a careful, documentary feel alongside its personal perspective.

Beyond that, firm biographical details are hard to confirm from the sources found here. What can be said with confidence is that Bales left behind a valuable regimental history of the First World War, one shaped by close involvement with the unit he described.
