About the author

Born in Baltimore on July 9, 1876, Otto Schoenrich studied at Baltimore City College and the University of Maryland School of Law, later also earning a doctorate in law from the University of Havana. Early in his career he moved to Puerto Rico, where he served in legal and judicial posts, including as a district judge.

His work soon took on an international dimension. Schoenrich served in legal and financial roles connected to Santo Domingo and Cuba, later became president of the Nicaraguan Mixed Claims Commission, and eventually joined the New York law firm Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle. That background helps explain the practical, well-informed tone of his writing on public affairs and international law.

He is especially remembered as the author of Santo Domingo: A Country with a Future, a detailed early-20th-century study of the Dominican Republic. Written by someone with direct experience in the region, the book combines history, politics, and economic observation in a way that still makes it a useful window into its era.
