by Otto Ludwig
Born in Eisfeld, Thuringia, on February 11, 1813, Otto Ludwig became known as a dramatist, novelist, and critic, and is often described as one of the early figures of German realism.
He wrote during a period when German literature was shifting away from more idealized styles, and he stood out for his close attention to character, motivation, and the details of ordinary life. That interest in inner conflict and social reality gave his writing a more modern feel than much of the work around him.
Ludwig died on February 25, 1865. Though he is not as widely read in English today as some of his contemporaries, he remains an important part of 19th-century German literary history.
