About the author

Born in Hausjärvi on September 18, 1874, Oskari Mantere was a Finnish pedagogue, politician, and public official. He is widely associated with school and cultural policy, and he spent decades working as a teacher, textbook author, civil servant, and political figure.

Mantere served in the National Progressive Party and held several ministerial posts, including a term as Prime Minister of Finland from December 1928 to August 1929. He was also known for his work in educational administration, including leadership in the Finnish school system, where his influence lasted for more than forty years.

Alongside his public service, he wrote educational books, including school history texts. He died in Helsinki on December 9, 1942, and is remembered less for dramatic politics than for the steady, practical work that helped develop Finnish education.
