About the author

Born in 1862, Oscar Levertin became one of the most important figures in Swedish literature at the turn of the twentieth century. He was active as a poet, critic, and literary historian, and his essays and reviews made him a powerful presence in the cultural world.

Levertin is closely linked with the Swedish writers of the 1890s, who reacted against the naturalism of the previous decade. Britannica describes him as a leader of the Swedish Romantic movement of the 1890s, and other reliable biographical sources note how strongly he shaped literary taste through his criticism.

Later in his career, he also held the first chair of literary history at Stockholm University. He died in 1906, but his reputation has lasted as that of a writer and critic who helped define an era in Swedish letters.
