About the author

Born in 1831 and later active in the United States, Elizabeth Golcher Butler is remembered as a pioneer of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was deeply involved in the organization during the 19th century, a period when it was growing and defining its structure.

When the General Grand Chapter was established in 1876 to exercise authority over the ritual, she was elected its first Most Worthy Grand Matron and served from 1876 to 1878. That role places her at the center of the Order's early national history and helps explain why her name remains closely associated with the General Grand Chapter.

Beyond her place in fraternal history, Butler is also noted as a women's activist. She died in 1906, but her legacy endures through the institutional framework she helped build in the Order of the Eastern Star.
