About the author

Founded in 1887 by Edward C. Hegeler in La Salle, Illinois, Open Court Publishing Company was created as a place to explore big questions at the meeting point of science, religion, and philosophy. Paul Carus became a central figure in shaping that mission, and the company went on to become known as one of the early American academic presses.

Open Court published influential journals including The Open Court and The Monist, and it also became known for making important philosophical works more widely available in affordable editions. Over time, its catalog grew to include subjects such as psychology, comparative religion, and science, while staying focused on thoughtful nonfiction.

In more recent years, the Open Court name has remained especially visible through philosophy titles for general readers, including the popular Popular Culture and Philosophy series. Its legacy continues through the broader Carus publishing tradition in Illinois.
