Born in Franklin County, Iowa, in 1882, Oney Fred Sweet became a newspaper writer whose career was closely tied to the Chicago Tribune. Local and newspaper records describe him as a feature writer and later a suburban reporter, with a reporting career that stretched about 45 years, including roughly 35 years at the Tribune.
He was especially known for immersive, first-person reporting. One widely reprinted account explains that an editor sent him out to "stand in the other fellow’s shoes," and for years he tried different kinds of work so he could describe them from the inside. That approach gave his articles an easy, human tone and helped make him popular with readers.
Sweet also published books drawn from his newspaper work, including Applause Mail. He retired after a long journalism career and died in 1965, remembered as a reporter who made ordinary people and overlooked experiences feel interesting on the page.
