About the author

Born in Udine in 1874, Olinto Marinelli grew up in a family deeply connected to geography: he was the son of the geographer Giovanni Marinelli. He studied in Florence and went on to teach there, eventually succeeding his father at the Istituto di Studi Superiori, where he became a leading figure in Italian geography.

Marinelli is remembered for his work in physical geography, cartography, and anthropogeography. Sources describe him as an attentive observer of developments in German and American geographical studies, and as a scholar who helped bring those wider currents into Italian academic life.

He died in Florence in 1926. Though less widely known today than some of his contemporaries, he is still recognized as an important contributor to the growth of modern geography in Italy.
