About the author

James Fenimore Cooper was an American writer born in 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, and raised largely in Cooperstown, New York. Before becoming a full-time author, he attended Yale and served as a midshipman in the U.S. Navy, experience that later shaped the convincing maritime detail in many of his novels.

His breakthrough came with The Spy in 1821, and he went on to become one of the most widely read American authors of the 19th century. He is best known for the Leatherstocking Tales, especially The Last of the Mohicans, and he is also remembered as an important early writer of sea fiction.

Across novels, essays, and other works, he aimed to show that American history, landscapes, and conflicts could stand at the center of serious literature. That mix of action, place, and national identity helped make his work influential far beyond his own time.
