About the author

Born in 1789, James Fenimore Cooper became one of the first major American novelists and a central figure in early U.S. literature. He is most closely associated with the Leatherstocking Tales, the series that includes The Last of the Mohicans, and his work helped define the historical adventure novel in America.

Cooper wrote stories set on the frontier, at sea, and in the young republic, often exploring conflict, survival, and national identity. His fiction reached a wide international audience during his lifetime, and his influence can still be felt in later adventure writing and in the popular image of the American frontier.

He died in 1851, just before his sixty-second birthday. Today he is remembered not only for his bestselling novels, but also for helping prove that American settings and characters could stand at the center of serious, widely read literature.
