About the author

Born in Paimbœuf, France, on December 12, 1876, Octave Béliard was a physician and writer who built a career in both medicine and literature. He is remembered today mainly for his French science fiction and for the way his writing blended scientific curiosity with a taste for the strange and speculative.

Alongside fiction, he also wrote journalism and nonfiction, and his interests seem to have ranged widely across science, history, and more unusual subjects. That mix gives his work an appealing versatility: he could write with a doctor's eye for detail while still leaving room for imagination.

Béliard died in Paris on June 24, 1951. He was also one of the cofounders of the Groupement des écrivains médecins in 1949, a fitting role for someone whose life joined the worlds of healing and storytelling.
