Born in Sortavala in 1863, Oskar Relander was a Finnish pedagogue and researcher of folk poetry. He is especially associated with the Sortavala teacher seminary, where he served as director for many years, and with efforts to study and preserve Finnish and Karelian cultural traditions.
Relander also wrote and translated books. Some of his work drew on his own experiences, including the period when he was exiled to Siberia for political reasons in 1916–1917. That mix of scholarship, public life, and personal history gives his writing a grounded, human quality.
He died in Helsinki in 1930. Today he is remembered as part of Finland’s literary and educational history, with works that connect readers to the intellectual life, politics, and folklore of his time.
