About the author

Born in Tohmajärvi in 1856, Oskar Adolf Hainari was a Finnish secondary-school teacher, journalist, politician, and writer. He was known earlier by the surname Forsström, which he changed to Hainari in 1906.

Alongside his teaching and public life, he wrote historical works and textbooks, and sources describe him as a historian with a lasting interest in Karelia and its culture. His travels in Border Karelia informed books such as Kuvia Raja-Karjalasta, and his writing reflects both research and a practical educator’s wish to make history accessible.

Hainari also served in Finnish political life, first in the Diet of Finland and later in Parliament, representing the Finnish Party. He died in Helsinki in 1910, leaving behind a body of work shaped by scholarship, civic involvement, and a close connection to Finnish national and regional history.
