About the author

Born in Kew on March 4, 1862, Norman Rowland Gale became an English poet, novelist, and reviewer whose career stretched across the late Victorian and early twentieth-century literary world. He studied at Exeter College, Oxford, graduating in 1884, and after some years as a teacher, he turned to writing full-time in 1892.

Gale became especially known for lyrical, approachable poetry, including work connected with rural life, nature, childhood, and sport. His long publishing career produced many books over almost half a century, helping him build a reputation as a polished and readable popular poet rather than an experimental one.

He died on October 7, 1942. Today he is often remembered for the gentleness and clarity of his verse, which made poetry feel close to ordinary life and easy to enjoy.
