About the author

Norma Stillwell was an American naturalist, writer, and bird-song recordist best known for work she created with her husband, Jerry Stillwell. Together they recorded North American birds in the field, and their Bird Songs of Dooryard, Field and Forest albums were built from long stretches of travel and careful editing of original recordings.

The Stillwells’ notes on those recordings show how hands-on their work was: they spent months traveling across the eastern United States in 1953 capturing songs and calls, then months more preparing the material. Their recordings were valued not just as listening experiences, but as a way to compare species and hear the variety within familiar bird voices.

Stillwell also wrote about the natural world in a practical, accessible way. The surviving references available here point to a life centered on birds, field observation, and sharing that knowledge with other nature lovers. I wasn’t able to confirm a reliable portrait image from the sources I found, so none is included.
