Nilo María Fabra

1843–1903

A restless 19th-century Spanish man of letters, he moved easily between journalism, politics, and imaginative fiction. He is especially remembered today for early speculative tales that gave Spanish readers a glimpse of science fiction before the genre had fully taken shape.

About the author

Born in Blanes, Spain, in 1843 and later active in Madrid, he built a remarkably varied career as a journalist, writer, and politician. Contemporary reference sources describe him as a war correspondent, newspaper collaborator, and the founder of Agencia Fabra, an important news agency in Spain.

Alongside his work in the press and public life, he wrote poetry, theater, short fiction, and prose that often blended current events with invention. He has drawn lasting interest for stories that anticipate modern science fiction, using satire, fantasy, and futuristic ideas to comment on politics and society.

He died in Madrid in 1903. For many readers today, his appeal lies in that mix of sharp journalistic observation and bold imagination: he wrote from the world of newspapers, but he also liked to ask what the future might look like.
