About the author

Born in Urberach near Darmstadt on March 27, 1884, Nikolaus Schwarzkopf was a German writer who first trained and worked as a teacher. Later he became a freelance author, building a literary career after his years in the classroom.

He is remembered for fiction as well as historical writing, and in 1930 he received the Georg Büchner Prize. Sources about his life also note that he worked at the Darmstadt adult education center before losing that position in 1933, after which he went to Berlin.

In his later years he returned to the Darmstadt area. He died in Darmstadt on October 17, 1962, and is still associated with Urberach, where his memory has been preserved locally.
