About the author
Born in Lelić near Valjevo, Nikolaj Velimirović (1880–1956) became a leading figure in the Serbian Orthodox Church and served as Bishop of Ohrid and Žiča. He was known not only as a bishop, but also as a preacher and prolific spiritual writer whose works reached readers far beyond Serbia.
His life was shaped by the upheavals of the 20th century. During the Second World War, he was detained by the occupying German authorities, and after the war he did not return to live in Yugoslavia. He eventually settled in the United States, where he taught at Saint Sava Seminary in Pennsylvania.
Velimirović remains especially remembered for his sermons, theological reflections, and devotional writing, including works that continue to circulate widely in Orthodox Christian reading. For many readers, his appeal lies in the direct, vivid way he connected faith, suffering, prayer, and everyday life.
