About the author

Niilo Mantere was the pen name of Juhani Nikolai Merenheimo, born in Kuopio on June 13, 1870, and died on February 20, 1954. He studied at Oulu Lyceum and completed a theology degree at the University of Helsinki in 1899. Alongside his literary work, he was ordained as a Lutheran pastor and later served as both chaplain and long-time vicar in Oulunsalo.

His career moved between the church, the classroom, and the press. Sources describe him as a teacher, editor, and member of the Pyrkijä editorial staff in the 1890s, and he also taught religion at the folk high school in Liminka. That mix of public service and literary work helps explain the tone of his writing: earnest, civic-minded, and closely tied to spiritual life.

Mantere is remembered mainly for poetry collections such as Kevättuulahduksia (1891), Elämän poluilla (1902), Kotikuusta kuunnellessa (1907), Kohden kunnahia (1908), Hämyhetkiä (1909), Lauluja matkalta (1910), and Valkea maa (1918). Reference sources describe his poems as idealistic and often patriotic-religious in theme, and note that he also translated spiritual songs and hymns.
