Born Nikolai Kivimäki in Lehtimäki on September 30, 1862, he later became known as Niilo Kivinen. He was a Finnish teacher, journalist, and writer, and he also used the pen name Niku.
Kivinen is remembered for fiction rooted in everyday Finnish life. His known works include Vanhoillinen, Aholan asukkaat, and Tuppelan Kalle ja Koturi-Heikki, all of which reflect the concerns of ordinary people and communities in a changing society.
He was also connected with the newspaper Vaasan Lehti, where he worked as an editor. Kivinen died in Vaasa on October 18, 1895, at just 33 years old.
