About the author

Niilo E. Wainio, born Niilo Engelbrekt Vainio in 1860, was a Finnish priest, teacher, poet, and translator. He was born in Askainen and died in 1931 in Isokyrö. Older records note that his family name was Östmansson until 1906.

He is especially remembered for helping introduce Hungarian-language literature to Finnish readers through his translations. Alongside that work, he also wrote poetry, showing the same interest in language and rhythm that shaped his literary career.

Wainio’s life seems to have joined literary work with public service: he worked in the church and in education, and he later served in Isokyrö. That mix of pastor, teacher, and man of letters gives his work a thoughtful, grounded character.
