About the author

Born in Cosenza in 1850, Nicola Misasi built a long literary career as a novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. Reliable reference sources describe him as a major Calabrian voice of his time, and note his strong connection to verismo, the Italian realist tradition.

Much of his writing drew on Calabria: its villages, customs, hardships, and emotional intensity. Works often associated with him include Racconti calabresi, In Magna Sila, Cronache del brigantaggio, and La badia di Montenero, which helped make him one of the best-known literary interpreters of his region.

He also worked as a teacher and remained active in Italian cultural life before his death in Rome in 1923. Today he is remembered above all for turning Calabrian settings and voices into the heart of his fiction.
