About the author

Born in Šibenik in Dalmatia in 1802, Niccolò Tommaseo became one of the most wide-ranging Italian writers of the 19th century. He was known as a linguist, journalist, essayist, and editor, with a deep interest in language, literature, religion, and public life.

He is especially remembered for major reference works, including a dictionary of Italian synonyms and the large Dizionario della lingua italiana, published in multiple volumes over many years. His writing was not limited to scholarship, though: he was also involved in the political struggles of his time, and his criticism of Austrian rule led to imprisonment.

That mix of literary devotion and civic conviction gives his work its lasting character. Even today, he stands out as a figure who treated words not as ornaments, but as tools for thought, memory, and national culture.
