About the author

Born in Boston on July 25, 1857, Nathaniel Carl Goodwin became known to audiences as Nat C. Goodwin. He made his early mark in musical theater and light opera, and by the late 1800s he had grown into one of the best-known American comedians and leading men on the stage.

Goodwin was especially associated with lively comic performances, impersonations, and popular Broadway productions. Later in his career he also appeared in silent films, including Oliver Twist, Business Is Business, and The Marriage Bond. He died in New York City on January 31, 1919.

Remembered today as a major theatrical personality of his era, Goodwin belonged to the generation of performers who bridged vaudeville, Broadway, and the earliest years of American film. His story gives a vivid glimpse of show business before Hollywood took center stage.
