About the author

Born in Boston in 1857, Nathaniel Carl Goodwin became one of the best-known American actors of his era. Reliable biographical sources describe an early start in the theatre after he had been working as a clerk, and note that he first gained attention in comic parts before broadening his range.

He was especially associated with musical theatre, light opera, and polished stage comedy, and he made his Broadway debut in the 1870s. Over time, he took on a wider variety of roles and remained a recognizable theatrical figure for decades, which helps explain why his name still appears in histories of American performance from the period.

Goodwin died in New York City in 1919. In addition to his stage fame, he is also remembered for a small body of silent-film work and for the glimpse his career offers into the fast-changing entertainment world of turn-of-the-century America.
