About the author

Born in Valls, Catalonia, in 1846, Narcís Oller became one of the central figures of the Catalan literary revival known as the Renaixença. Trained in law, he worked as a public official while building a literary career that would make him a key pioneer of the modern Catalan novel.

Oller is especially known for realist and naturalist fiction that explored social change, ambition, money, and urban life. Among his best-known works are La papallona, L'escanyapobres, La febre d'or, and Pilar Prim. His writing played an important role in showing that Catalan could serve as a rich and flexible language for contemporary narrative.

He lived from 1846 to 1930, a period of major cultural and political change, and his novels remain closely tied to that world while still feeling vividly human. For listeners today, he offers both a window into Catalonia's past and a clear, engaging storytelling voice.
