About the author

Born in Castrogiovanni, Sicily, in 1847, Napoleone Colajanni was an Italian writer, journalist, criminologist, socialist, and politician. As a young man he fought with Garibaldi, was captured after the Aspromonte campaign, and later earned a medical degree before turning more fully toward public life.

In the 1880s he shifted from republicanism to socialism and became an important theorist of the movement in Italy. He is especially remembered for his sharp writing on the conditions of southern Italy and for his outspoken criticism of political corruption and the mafia, which made him a major voice in debates about Sicily's social and economic problems.

Colajanni also served in parliament and remained active as a public intellectual for decades. His work brought together reform politics, social investigation, and a strong moral sense of civic responsibility, helping secure his place as one of the most notable Sicilian thinkers of his time.
