by Nanny Hammarström
Born in Vaasa on March 23, 1870, she became a teacher and spent much of her working life teaching mathematics, natural history, and geography in schools in places including Gamlakarleby, Mariehamn, and Lovisa. Alongside her teaching, she was active in civic and social life in Lovisa.
She is remembered chiefly as a Finland-Swedish author of children's books. Nature and animals were central to her writing, and her best-known title, Två myrors äventyr (The Adventures of Two Ants), remained especially popular. She also wrote works shaped by childhood memories and family life.
She died in Lovisa on December 3, 1953. Although not widely known today, her work still stands out for its gentle curiosity, educational spirit, and affection for the small details of the world around her.
