About the author

Shi Nai'an was a Chinese writer associated with the late Yuan and early Ming periods, and he is traditionally credited with Water Margin (Shuihu zhuan), one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. The book’s tales of outlaw heroes, loyalty, corruption, and rebellion helped make it one of the most famous works in the Chinese literary tradition.

Very little about his life can be confirmed with confidence. Standard reference sources describe him as a figure from roughly the fourteenth century, but they also note that reliable biographical evidence is scarce, which has left later generations to piece together his story from limited records and literary tradition.

That air of mystery is part of what makes him so memorable. Whether seen as the sole author, a compiler, or a legendary literary name attached to a long storytelling tradition, Shi Nai'an remains closely linked with a novel that has shaped readers, writers, and popular culture for centuries.
