About the author

Born in 1879, Neville Stuart Talbot was an Anglican priest, chaplain, and later bishop whose writing was closely tied to the spiritual questions raised by war. He served as an army chaplain during the First World War and was awarded the Military Cross. That experience deeply influenced books such as Thoughts on Religion at the Front and Religion Behind the Front.

Talbot went on to become Bishop of Pretoria in South Africa and later served in England, including at St Mary's Church in Nottingham and as an assistant bishop in Southwell. Alongside his pastoral work, he wrote about Christian belief in a way that aimed to be honest, compassionate, and useful rather than abstract.

He also took a strong interest in church unity, and several of his books reflect that concern. He died in 1943, but his writing still offers a clear window into how one thoughtful churchman tried to make sense of faith in a troubled age.
