About the author

Born in 1854 and known as N. R. af Ursin, Nils Robert af Ursin was a Finnish author and translator who wrote in Swedish. He belonged to the generation of writers working in Finland during a period of strong cultural and political change, and his career linked literary work with service in public administration.

Alongside his own writing, he translated books into Swedish, helping readers in Finland encounter works from other languages. That mix of original writing and translation made him part of the wider literary world of his time, not just as an author but also as a cultural mediator.

He died in 1936. Although he is not among the most widely known Nordic authors today, his work reflects the multilingual, internationally connected literary culture of Finland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
