About the author

Born in Kuopio in 1854, Nils Robert af Ursin was trained as a classicist and worked as a secondary-school teacher in Finland. Alongside his teaching career, he became active in public life and gradually emerged as an important figure in Finnish politics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

He is especially remembered as one of the founding figures of Finland’s labor movement. Sources describe him as a founding member of the Finnish Labour Party, its first chairman, and later a politician who served both in the Diet of Finland and in the Parliament of Finland. His political path shifted over time from liberalism toward socialism, which helped make him a distinctive voice in Finnish civic debate.

Af Ursin was also a prolific author. Catalogs and digitized collections list works by him in subjects ranging from politics and social questions to travel and other nonfiction, showing how active he was as a public writer as well as a teacher and political organizer. He died in Hämeenlinna in 1936.
