A Danish-born Lutheran minister who wrote warmly about faith, family, and immigrant life, he reached readers on both sides of the Atlantic. His best-known English-language book shares Christmas reflections shaped by memory, devotion, and community.

by N. P. (Niels Peter) Gravengaard
Born in Denmark in 1865, Niels Peter Gravengaard later made his life in the United States, where he served as a Lutheran minister. Available family-history records identify him as Reverend Niels Peter Gravengaard and give his lifespan as 1865 to 1948.
His surviving reputation as a writer rests largely on A Christmas Gift to the American Home and the Youth of America. In the book's original introduction, the translator describes it as a translation from Danish and says Gravengaard's work had already found unusual success among Danes in the United States, Americans of Danish descent, and readers in Denmark.
That same introduction presents him as a former president of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and mentions other works including Eternal Life and Everlasting Joy and Lectures. His writing, at least in the work most easily available today, is gentle and personal, blending religious reflection with nostalgia for home and the closeness of family life.
