Best known for The Squirrel Hunters of Ohio, this 19th-century Ohio doctor wrote with the eye of someone who had watched the frontier give way to settled communities. His work preserves everyday pioneer memories as much as big historical events.

by N. E. (Nelson Edward) Jones
Nelson Edward Jones, often listed as Nelson Edwards Jones, was an Ohio physician and writer born in 1821 and died in 1901. His best-known book, The Squirrel Hunters of Ohio; or, Glimpses of Pioneer Life, was published in 1898 and credits him as "N. E. Jones, M.D."
In the book's introduction, he presents himself as both an "actor" and a witness to the changes that shaped the old Northwest Territory. Rather than focusing only on battles and famous figures, he was interested in the smaller details of frontier life—the habits, hardships, and memories that made pioneer experience feel real.
Archival records also connect him with Circleville and Pickaway County, Ohio, through the Nelson E. Jones family collections. A reliable portrait image could not be confirmed from the sources reviewed, so none is included here.
