Born Helena Walsh in County Londonderry in 1878, she became widely known in print as Mrs. Thomas Concannon after marrying scholar and writer Thomas Concannon. She was educated at Loreto schools and went on to study at the Royal University of Ireland and the National University of Ireland, building a strong reputation as a historian, writer, and Irish-language scholar.
Her books helped popularize Irish history for general readers, and she wrote with a clear interest in the people and events that shaped Ireland. She is especially associated with historical writing on Irish national life and with studies of women in Irish history.
Concannon also had a public career in politics as a Fianna Fáil representative, serving in both Seanad Éireann and Dáil Éireann. She died in 1952, leaving behind a body of work that joined research, patriotism, and a gift for telling history in an engaging way.
