About the author

Henrietta Octavia Weston Barnett (1851–1936), often published as Mrs. S. A. Barnett, was an English social reformer, educationist, and author. She worked closely with her husband, Samuel Augustus Barnett, and is strongly associated with Toynbee Hall in London, one of the best-known early settlement houses.

Alongside her public work, she wrote books and essays on social questions, including Practicable Socialism, Practicable Socialism, New Series, Towards Social Reform, and Canon Barnett: His Life, Work, and Friends. Her writing reflects deep engagement with poverty, charity, housing, and education, and it tends to focus on practical reform rather than abstract theory.

She is also remembered for helping shape Hampstead Garden Suburb and for connecting social action with culture and learning. For listeners coming to her work today, she stands out as a writer whose ideas grew directly from lived experience and sustained work in the community.
